Why are so many companies unhappy with their new websites?

January 13, 2015

Since 2004 I have had numerous companies approach me because they are very unhappy with their websites which have often taken years to build and for which they have paid upwards of tens of thousands of dollars.  This is an extremely common problem that can easily be avoided with a little bit of research and know how.

If you need a website for your company and have no previous experience in website development and strategy, I highly recommend hiring someone like myself to help you streamline and expedite the process.  On average I save companies upwards of $20,000 and months of needless stress.

There are many reasons that the web development process can be so dissatisfying and disappointing. Often the fault lies on both the developer and the client.  Even when a web developer is an attentive, patient professional with years of experience, if the client is not completely up to speed and comfortable with the process, a website that should take a few months can take a year and a half.  As the timeline grows, the competent web developer may become less and less responsive because he/she finds dealing the client to be increasingly frustrating.

Sadly, often the client isn't very experienced with the most efficient and practical ways to approach website creation AND the website developer is not very attentive or good with customer service.  This combination can be extremely trying for both client and developer.

Some of the best regarded web developers in the Burlington area (and indeed everywhere) are terrible at customer service and take weeks to reply to client inquiries and requests, simply because they don't feel the need to do so.   Although they get the contract signed with promises of quick turn around and a superior product, once it is signed, customer service disappears.  I've spoken with people who are having their website developed by the "best" Burlington companies and ask how it's going and I hear, "X Company is good, but it's now six months longer than they initially promised with no end in sight".

I've called such companies to get quotes and it takes weeks for them to get back to me or I need to chase them down for a response. Even if a company is extremely busy, if they can't return your email within a few days, that points more to bad customer service than them being in high demand.

Good website developers are adept at educating, designing and developing websites.  But they are generally not web marketing strategists or content writers.  Clients who are not experts at web strategy and content writing, even when they have the best developer, usually end up with a website that takes many more months than it should and with which they are very dissatisfied because it doesn't effectively convey their message or sell their brand.

I am an expert at working with inexperienced and experienced clients to efficiently and quickly walk them through the website development process.  Often, I am the person who works with them to develop their website strategy and content.  Even when the client has a good handle on the message they want their website to convey, I can work with them to make sure they say it efficiently, concisely and in a way that translates well online.  I'm also adept in getting slow developers to move forward on projects.  Fortunately, I generally help clients choose extremely competent and responsive developers that I already know to ensure my clients get good customer service. In the case of small companies, I can create websites myself in as little as a week, easily saving these clients $5000+ and ensuring that their website strategy and message is compelling and effective.
